Avant-Garde Lawyers have requested to order release of poet Galal El-Behairy on the hearing on 21 March 2023.
In their letter to the Prosecutor General, Avant-Garde Lawyers write:
Tomorrow, 21 March 2023, El-Behairy’s hearing to decide on the extension of his preventive detention will take place and we urge you to consider the following elements and order his provisional release until the start of the trial:
- Mr. El-Behairy does not pose any danger to society and is fully committed to cooperate with the state authorities during the pending investigation in Case No. 2000/2021, and to prove his innocence.
- A continuation of his deprivation of liberty pending trial will undermine his right to a fair trial and presumption of innocence, a core principle in any system of justice.
- Since 5 March 2023, Mr. El-Behairy has been on hunger strike and we are very concerned for his health, which will deteriorate significantly with the progression of his hunger strike.
