Egyptian poet Galal El-Behairy had to be taken to hospital on Saturday, 3 June 2023. After almost 13 weeks of hunger strike and 3 days of thirst strike, Galal needed medical assistance and had to break his strike for a short period.
Galal started his hunger strike on 5 March 2023, the date that marked 5 years of his imprisonment in Egypt. On 31 July 2018, he was sentenced to 3 years in prison by a Military Court in Cairo, for his unpublished book of poetry, The Finest Women on Earth. Despite having finished serving his sentence in 2021, he was not released but detained on similar accusations in a new case.
We are extremely concerned about Galal's health, and we demand his immediate and unconditional release.
