Ramy Essam received the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent at Oslo Freedom Forum on May 29th 2019.
Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent is an award established in 2012 by the New York City -based Human Rights Foundation (HRF). The prize recognizes individuals "who engage in creative dissent, exhibiting courage and creativity to challenge injustice and live in truth".
“I am honored to receive the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent. I am happy to share the prize with all the freedom fighters who received this award before, and the ones who will follow. I share this prize with poet Galal El-Behairy, as well as with everybody who believe in my music and my message – I share it with the people”, says Ramy Essam.
